Assembly members have no room to talk

The Anchorage Daily News did its best this week to manufacture a scandal involving Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan. The agenda driven paper ran a story with the headline, “Life insurance for late mayor raises eyebrows.”
There is no there there in this sorry but the left wing bloggers have been shopping it to media types and what do you know, the Daily News took he bait, hook, line, and sinker.
The truth of the matter is the Anchorage Assembly back in 1982 decided to award then retiring Mayor George Sullivan a life insurance policy for life. It turns out the current Mayor Dan Sullivan, son of George, was named trustee of the life insurance trust.
Dan Sullivan had nothing to do with setting up the policy, and as trustee, it is his fiduciary responsibility to execute the trust once his father passed away. And as Mayor it is his responsibility to see the insurance money is paid.
That’s it. There’s nothing more to this.
There is an underlying story that the Daily News refuses to address. It’s the comment by Socialist Six member Harriet Drummond.
The paper reports Drummond questioned whether it was legal for the city to act like an insurance company, collect premiums and pay the trust.
"If there were enough (Assembly members) who realized this was stupidity and voted no, then Anchorage's taxpayers would still have $200,000 in the bank," Drummond said.
So all of sudden Ms. Drummond is concerned about Anchorage taxpayers. The same Ms. Drummond who voted for those union contracts that will add an addition $200 million dollars onto the backs of Anchorage homeowners.
The same Ms. Drummond who voted for union contracts that promote union monopolies and drive up the cost of jobs done for the city by eliminating the non-union work force when it comes to bidding on certain city jobs. This practice adds even more costs to the already overburdened Anchorage home owner.
This current Assembly led by and controlled by Drummond and her fellow socialists have betrayed Anchorage taxpayers by paying off union bosses who gave them campaign cash to get elected.
For Drumond to make a stink about spending $200,000 on anything is the classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.
In a couple hours it'll be five full days since Dan or one of this site's dozens of "contributors" like Lisa Murkowski, Julie Hasquet, or Penny Nixon have posted anything to The Alaska Standard (For Social Irresponsibility).
Could it be that the Dan Sullivan fiasco has given Dan an epiphany? That Dan's finally figured out his heroes Sullivan, Stevens, Kohring, and Kott are actually just thieves who exploit dumb people for support?
Has a dim little lightbulb finally lit over the head of the guy paid by KFQD to interrupt commercials for a few minutes every weekday afternoon?
Probably not.

maligant.
good blog informative about mayor well written interesting to read .......good blog......thanks......
I wonder why Dan Sullivan lied about only learning about the so-called insurance "last year"?
Even though Dan Sullivan personally came to the city in 2002 to pay the so-called premiums?
Actually, I know why, and it's not because Dan Sullivan was in a coma for the past eight years.
It's because Dan Sullivan is another unemployable, two-faced, lying thief who pretends to be a conservative with our tax dollars, knowing lots of dumb people will fall for it.
Because they do fall for it.
Vic Kohring knows. Ted Stevens knows. Sarah Palin, Lesil McGuire, Pete Kott, Tom Anderson, they all know.
All of them pretending to be conservative with our tax dollars, all of them lining their pockets with them just the same.
I hope he spends some the tax dollars he stole on the spammers who sell their so-called goods on this site, they deserve each other.

Vomit?
Who has no difficulty ripping off taxpayers who aren't of her elitist ilk. Perhaps it's time to revisit PERS/TRS make some drastic changes. Dan Sullivan could give up his 200K payout and the fatcat government Tier 1 retirees could have their pensions absorbed by Social Security. Y'all know that is a truly fair system!
good blog more informative about the mayor and his scandel actually he is not there directly nice to read more about life insurance factors ........good blog.......thanks......

It appear something is fishy. I would like an audit.
$200,000 in tax dollars.
Anchorage tax dollars.
Straight into Dan Sullivan's pockets.
And Dan Fagan is fine with it?
Oh yeah, he doesn't own a house and pays no property taxes.
He's 51 years old and still renting! lol

Question 1 - If mark was still mayor, would you have a problem with the life insurance payout to the Sullivan family?
Question 2 - Is Fagan's choice to rent relevant in any conversation?
Question 3 - Is it your argument that renters pay no property taxes directly or indirectly?
1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. No.

Why would we give ben Cash?
How is it relevant?
...dan sullivan paid $565 annually on his father's insurance policy.
apparently the only mayor in history to keep the policy after he left office.
and the muni apparently assumed laibility, when the insurance company found out he was still being covered? the insurance company suggested simply returning the premiums, correct?
and how did sullivan sr. get such a bargain rate in the first place? insured when he was in his 50s and had already had major heart surgery.
this is a taxpayer funded $200,000 payout on a $15,000 investment. nice work if you can get it. wonder what the 'alaska double standard' would be saying if begich had been the beneficiary?
than the union contracts, retirements, you don't have a problem with that.
except the union negotiates wages and benefits for all of its members at the same time, the negotiations are conducted in the light of day and the terms are agreed upon by labor and management... resulting in a contract. and retirement plans benefit living people, where [as a single member of the salary board was sharp enough to point out back in '82] life insurance only benefits the family survivors.
this was a deal that was unprecedented, probably voted on at 11:59 pm. the muni/assembly has not before or since done anything else like this for anybody else -- and it was clearly against normal rules and procedures.
it was approved by the assembly, just like the union contracts. May I remind you the contracts were under FALSE pretense. Also you seem to forget not all contracts were up at the same time, One of those contracts should have been negotiated by Sullivans administration. Yet because they were approved by the assembly they are binding. Respect for the man is why deals like this are made. The 11:59 thing is a dirty trick brought to light by the unscrupulous begich and the liberal assembly. Get a life.
like there was an agreement of some sort, but not an actual contract.
this will be interesting to watch.
will he end up giving back the money, you think?
are saying is that when the assembly votes on a agreement it's not valid? A contract does not have to be written to be valid. To be valid both parties must be committed to the agreement. For 20 + years this "verbal" contract has been maintained. So in your court of law what would be the reasonable expectation? Valid or invalid?
in '02, which was to give back the premiums sullivan sr. and the family had been paying for 20 years.
since he ignored the advice, the city became an insurer from that point forward [or maybe they had been all along, that part isn't clear]. thus, the current assembly's conclusions on the matter are sound.
but drummond is also correct that the whole basis and situation is totally bizarre. who pays life insurance premiums to a city government? they might be collected through paycheck deductions, but the payments are made to an insurer. and no insurer would have issued a policy on a 50-something man with a heart operation for that rate. so in that sense, the expectations aren't reasonable at all.
i'm guessing he'll give the money back, or donate it to charity because it will bring him more political fallout than it's worth. it makes him look hypocritical while arguing about begich's financial practices, to say the least.
the city should not be in allot of business. Philanthropy should be the social network that keeps this city in harmony. The city needs to stick to basic necessity, roads, police, fire, basic education without federal control, not much more. It is ridiculous that I pay more in property tax than I paid in rent in the 70's. The liberal assembly has ,on its own, turned neighbors against each other. All for an socialist agenda. Personally I would rather live in harmony, but how can I when I am FORCED to pay at the risk of my home.
hypocrisy throughout the democratic party. Look at what the feds are doing, first crying foul, then acting on the foul they object to. No different here. I do not believe in anything the democrats say, why because they will say anything to anyone to get what they want, that's lying! Dan you are right this is no different than a five year contract, with the exception that the contracts were under false pretense lead by begich and the liberal sicks. Another lie.
The comments about Ms. Drummond may be on target but remember where she came from. It was once stated that people usually end up getting the kind of government they deserve. In other words, who elects these people? The quote below is about Obama but applies here as well.
"The danger toAmerica is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to an electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president. -- Author Unknown
I can agree with this statement to a slight degree. Where this statement goes wrong is through educational system. The left is teaching our children now. With that educational system is the lack of actual history, the lack of teaching the constitution, our laws of the land, the lack of a basic education, reading, writing, math, American history. In return they teach social justice, which leads to hatred of race, and social class. They teach narcissism instead of family values. They teach dependence instead of independence, and that dependence is on the government. This is where we are loosing our country, to the ignorance of the students that are taught an agenda instead of the truth. In today's society truth has no value, without truth nothing will work. Now they can vote...the democrats may have the advantage through educational conditioning.
where what I wrote is wrong and where you and I disagree. I do not disagree with anything you say here and don't see where we differ. Your comments on social conditioning are correct. I commented on fools in the electorate. One follows the other.
My point reflects what the problem is, as you did, public education. Thanks for the call out.
I would expect no less from Ms. Drummond. Can't wait for her to run for re-election. Hopefully the socialist 6 will be reduced to the socialist 3 in next month's assembly election, making Ms. Drummond a member of the liberal minority.
