A bill proposed by Alaska State Representative Mike Doogan would ban cell phone use while driving. Is this another example of the ever-expanding Nanny State or is it a good public policy promoting safety. We debated it on the show yesterday.

but based on what i've seen out there, i am all for it.
If Dan doesn't believe in the science regarding the dangers of cell phone use while driving then I'm sure he still believes the world is flat. He'll change his tune when one of his friends is maimed by a driver using a cell phone while diriving. When he makes such ridiculous claims like this it really makes me think twice about any of his other arguments on politics, values, etc.

cabs have transmitting radios and computers. I can't even figure how APD can do it, look in those cars. What about all the others with distractions UPS and the like. I see, they will be exempt. This will be another law for the common person. We are that stupid. Thanks Mike Doogan for letting us know...law maker dad.
The National Safety Council said in a study released Tuesday that drivers distracted by cell-phone talking and texting cause 28 percent of traffic accidents.
Apparently, not everyone can successfully multi-task like Dan Fagan. And the crazy random braking I see from the vehicles in front of me while the driver is talking on their cell is all the proof I need. If you're driving, DRIVE.
Cell phone use, whether talking or texting, while driving your car, should be outlawed. I can't count the number of times I've been held up in traffic by slow drivers, those sitting at a stop light after it turns green, and drivers simply not paying attention only to find them on their cell phones as I pass them. Those who think talking on a cell phone while driving is not distracting are part of the problem because they are oblivious to reality. It is distracting by any definition and should be outlawed with stiff finds for violation. Kudos for Rep. Doogan's efforts with his bill to ban cell phone use while driving. Unfortunately I don't think his efforts on this matter will pass because it reeks to much of common sense.
Absolutely, we should pass a law banning cell phone usage while driving. While we're at it, we also need to pass a law against changing CDs while driving, eating cheesburgers while driving, turning your head to talk to the guy next to you, looking at an accident, turning your head to read the cardboard sign the guy standing on the street is holding, styling your hair, doing your make up, reading the newspaper, reading a book, reaching down to scratch your foot, turning around to yell at your kids. . . wow, this is a long list. We may need a full time employee just to write these nanny state laws.
Maybe we could just pass a law that makes it illegal to do dangerous things while driving. We could call it. . . say . . . reckless driving, or careless driving. What? Those already exist? Hmmm, I guess this is just a waste of time then huh? Wow.
Those who work on theNorth Slope live with this "no cell phone" rule while driving on the field. The difference is they derive my living from that oil patch and if the producers they say no cell phones while driving so be it. The government isn't paying me though so it would be nice if they'd back off! As Mike Dingman here put it there are already laws on the books to deal with reckless or careless driving. Why not enforcing those laws first? Maybe common sense is too much to ask
